Biography

“In my opinion, the characteristics of a great presenter/educator include being a professional who is not only an expert in their respective field of study with a deep knowledge base, but also someone who can get their points across to a diverse audience in different ways if needed.  One has to not only possess the knowledge, one has to be a very effective communicator as well and Dr. Farrow has these characteristics.”

-- Dr. Glen Ray, Chair, Department of Psychology, AUM

I received a Ph.D. in History from Tulane University, with a specialty in Russian History. Since 1999, I have worked at Auburn University at Montgomery as a professor in the Department of History and was named Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007 and received the Champion of Student Success Award in 2013. I was part of the committee that created our university success class for incoming freshman (UNIV 1000) and I teach that class each year. I also am co-chair of our common reading program, AUM Connected. I have also served in several administrative positions, from 2007-14 as Associate Dean in the School of Liberal Arts and from 2014-2017 as the Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching(CELT), a center on campus that designed and coordinated professional development opportunities in the area of teaching for AUM faculty and instructors.  The university decided to close CELT in the spring of 2017.

During my time as Director of CELT, I attended numerous teaching conferences and created many professional development opportunities for faculty and staff on AUM’s campus, covering a range of topics from classroom management issues and grading practices to working with first generation and underprepared students. I have done professional development for local high schools and community colleges as well.

I am also a published author in my field. I have published a variety of articles on Russia-American relations in journals and essay collections. In December 2014, I published Alexis in America: A Russian Grand Duke’s Tour, 1871-72, the story of the three-month visit of Tsar Alexander II’s son to the United States, with Louisiana State University Press. In 2017, my newest book, Seward’s Folly: A New Look at the Alaska Purchase, appeared with the University of Alaska Press in time for the 150th anniversary of that event.  I work and reside in Montgomery, Alabama, but may travel for professional development opportunities.

In 2018 and 2019, I was selected to receive a SUPER Teacher Grant by the Alabama Humanities Foundation to provide professional development workshops for teachers.  The first, in January 2019, was on the very important and relevant topic of Russian-American relations. The second, in January 2020, looked at spies and espionage in history.
